Jared Leto for HUGO Boss.

Wait, WHAT. Jared Leto. In a new HUGO BOSS Just Different fragrance commercial. Smizing SO HARD we’re practically dead. Like, his piercing blue eyes are so intense we can’t tell if he wants to douse us in perfume and light us on fire or hardcore make out. HOW. DOES. HE. DO. IT. Echelon, you feel me on this one? So hot, right? And this too-intense-for-life stare is literally within the FIRST SECOND on the commercial. First second! There’s still 19 glorious seconds left to drool over, and by golly, we will. I mean, after he was named the face of Hugo Boss’s Just Different fragrance in the spring, we’ve been stalking Mr. Hugo like a BOSS. (Lamest joke ever!) But, we’re going to be honest here, we weren’t prepared for this.

Throughout the commercial he’s (literally) flipping his world upside down with every shake of the bottle, and then, BAM. He’s in da club with his bros, and they’re all walking in slow motion. He looks soooo cool. I mean, not because of the slow motion, but because of that suit! It fits disgustingly well in all the right, erm, places, and the skinny tie just puts it over the edge. Plus, we kind of love how he left the tie loose to let us know that he’s cool, calm and collected. (You don’t need to tell us twice.) Also, you guys, Jared’s ALMOST 40. He hasn’t got a wrinkle anywhere on him (not even on that suit!), so we’re convinced he’s reverse aging andddd we’re jealous. OK, time to watch the commercial a billion more times now. Bye.

Rockers 30 Seconds To Mars are set to make history in December (11) for performing the most shows during a single album cycle.
The group has been promoting its latest record This Is War since its release in December, 2009, and now the band’s hard work has paid off.

The hitmakers will perform their 300th show at the Hammerstein Ballroom
in New York City on 7 December (11) and then kick-off a week of special
shows to celebrate the milestone.

Frontman Jared Leto says, “We have been on the road for an incredible
and insane two years and thought what better way to celebrate the end of
this phenomenal journey than with a week of special shows in New York
City.

“We thought documenting this for posterity with the Guinness Book of
World Records would be fun, especially as we aren’t any good at growing
our fingernails very long or cultivating the world’s largest squash.”

Jared Leto started his career as a teenage hearthrob in nineties drama ‘My So-Called Life’. Since then, he has played supporting roles in big Hollywood hits such as ‘Fight Club’, as well as the lead in art house cult classics, including ‘Requiem for a Dream’. Having gone to extremes for roles in the past, he discusses whether he’d do the same again, and talks about his most recent release ‘Mr Nobody’.

There are a lot of philosophical issues dealt with in ‘Mr Nobody’, what would you consider the main message?

The message that I most consider when thinking about ‘Mr Nobody’ is how actions have universal consequences. How the seemingly small choices that we make in life can have large impactful effects.

Do you believe in fate?

I have a lyric in one of my songs that says “I don’t believe in fate, but the bottom line it’s time to pay”. There are some elements in life that are unavoidable but I believe that in many ways we create our fate, that we carve out our own path in life by way of our actions.

If performing hadn’t worked out, where do you think you’d be now?

I originally studied to be a painter so I’d probably be standing in front of a canvas. That, or chemistry.

You actually filmed ‘Mr Nobody’ in 2007 – is it difficult doing interviews when so much time has passed? And do you find your answers have changed?

I don’t find it difficult to talk about the film. When I first read the script I was blown away. Jaco [director Jaco Van Dormael] created such an incredible world with rich characters and posed philosophical questions that really made me think and consider life and possibilities. I think the script still impacts me to this day.

You described playing Harry Goldfarb in ‘Requiem for a Dream’ as “the hardest thing I’ve done”, would you still agree?

I think ‘Requiem for a Dream’ was one of the most challenging roles i’ve ever taken on because it was gruelling both physically and emotionally. Putting on the weight for ‘Chapter 27′ was also very difficult physically. It’s a very different mental state from one to the other.

Having lost 28 pounds for one, and gained weight for another – were you concerned about the effects on your body? And would you do the same again?

I don’t think I would ever gain that much weight again for a role. Putting your body through that kind of experience has lasting effects. An interesting experience but not one I recommend.

It’s difficult for actors to cross over into music, but 30 Seconds to Mars has seen great success – why do you think that is?

I really don’t compare Thirty Seconds to Mars to other bands or projects, but a great deal of it probably comes down to whether people respond to the music or not. I think some people have probably made the mistake of thinking that just because they are successful in one area they will be in another. It doesn’t work that way. Just because someone is a good cop does mean the...

Quick Bio

Fight Club, Requiem for a Dream, American Psycho, and Lord of War. Jared Leto has been in some of the most influential manly movies of our time. He’s a talent with his own charmed story to tell, but as the main character, Leto is full of contradictions. His hippie upbringing, eccentric fashion sense and laid back, gentlemanly demeanor are a sharp contrast to his steely determination. Very steely indeed because we’re talking about someone who was willing to sleep on the streets, lose 28 pounds and, get this, refrain from getting physical with gorgeous ex-fiancée, Cameron Diaz, for two months to play a heroin addict. Almost 40 (he’s a good example of how age is just a number), the Mr. Nobody star continues to live on an express train, touring with his band, 30 Seconds to Mars, and representing the Hugo Boss fragrance, Just Different. Leto talked to us about backing a brand for the first time, playing Dominique Strauss-Kahn and living off the land.

You seem to blend right with the Hugo Boss DNA. Why did you take up their offer to represent Just Different?

Jared Leto : I thought it was the right thing at the right time. They came to me and described what they were doing, and I responded to it. I thought it would be fun. I’m on a stage most nights of my life. This is a new adventure. It’s a whole different world, and that is precisely why I wanted to go for it. I’ve had many companies approach me over the years, but it never felt right. When I sat with Hugo, I understood this was something unique, so I thought it would be great to get involved with it. I was proud to be asked in the first place.

What’s so « different » about it?

JL : I’m not exactly a fragrance guru, but truth be told, I wore it on the set of the TV commercial and walked into a room full of extras, and everyone started asking, “Who smells so good?” It’s a great perfume. It’s interesting how smells can affect one’s mood.

Were you involved in the development of the fragrance?

JL : They probably don’t want me doing that because they’re too good. They’re experts, and they have this guy with the biggest nose you’ve ever seen at some laboratory somewhere. He’s called “the nose.” I don’t think I’m capable of competing with that.

How would you describe your style?

JL : I don’t have a specific style that I go with every day. And, as a performer, it’s important to look the part, so I try to do what’s best for the show. I have made plenty of mistakes before — some of which you’re probably aware of — but it’s fun to try different things. Professionally, I don’t necessarily have to adhere to a certain dress code. However, I think that comfort is crucial. Otherwise, you won’t be able to have fun and express yourself.

What’s it like in the fast lane?

JL : It’s interesting because I’m always in a different city, performing to a different audience and learning different things. Most of the time, when we’re on...

translation :

If we didn’t know his movies, and the albums he made with his band 30 seconds to Mars, and we only saw the pictures of him, we would think he is a scandal loving cameleon-star, like Lady Gaga, but in a body of a male.
He had long hair, short hair, he was bald, had a pink mohawk, beach blond hair, had blue hair, intentionally grew down red-brown hair, rasta, Son Goku hair, wearing moustache, beard, emo make-up, he was fat, anorexic, and even had perfect Adonis like body – and we didn’t mention his crazy wardrobe choices!

Do you like shocking people with your look?

I don’t look the way I look to make people recoil, it’s only about me. It’s important for me to express my mood. One day I dyed my hair to blonde, and at 4 A.M. I had the feeling like changing it to black, and I called my hairdresser. I never denied that I’m a capricious, and I’m quite obsessive when it comes to my look. I couldn’t live without diversity…

That’s why you couldn’t choose between being a musician or an actor?

Actually I wanted to become a painter (laugh). And it’s still very important to me to plan the videos, the album covers and everything belongs to the visuals. That’s why we made up with the two other members (inluding Jared’s brother, Shannon) our own icons. Some of them I tattooed on my body. But no matter if we talk about the music, the design, or a movie, the most important thing is not the surface, but the message, which can be harsh. I have dirty mouth, and I don’t like endearment.

You are famous for raising your voice against war, violence, drugs, and even your movies about these issues. Is this the most important thing in your life?

One of my friends bullied me by saying in every movie I’m killed or being beaten up (laugh). In Switchback I had a serious injury, I was beaten up in the Fight Club, in the Requiem for a Dream my arm was amputatedm in American Psycho I was brutally killed, I was shot down in the Panic Room, etc. I think it’s more important to demonstrate against injustice, than chit-chat about my private life, or my favourite colour in the magazines. It’s a really good feeling when I receive mails from vets saying that my songs gave them the strengths on the front and to leave it behind. But of course this vocation had its cost: when we were doing Requiem for a Dream, I was living on the street for months, I was starving, lost 12 kg, and avoided having sex, to be able to show what can drugs make with people. Then I lived estranged from the World in a Portugese monastery to come back to myself.

But you gave up avoiding sex, right?

Well, since everybody...

One of the most intimate shows on 30 Seconds to Mars’ worldwide tour is Sunday, Sept. 4, inside the MontBleu Theatre. The metal-neo prog rockers captured the world’s attention with their self-titled 2002 album. They are fronted by musician- actor Jared Leto. Three years later, after guitarist Tomo Milcevic joined the band, it had the platinum-selling CD “A Beautiful Lie.” In 2009, it released “This is War.” Drummer Shannon Leto spoke with Lake Tahoe Action before the show.

Q: Where are you today?

Leto: I am just at home in L.A., relaxing, picking out some mattresses to buy.

Q: I was told you were in Europe.

Leto: We’ve been touring for about two years now. It’s a long journey. We’re home for about a week. We had the MTV Awards and a couple shows on the West Coast and then over to Asia.

Q: Did you perform at the MTV Awards?

Leto: We didn’t perform. My brother presented and we were up for three awards.

Q: How did 30 Seconds to Mars become so successful?

Leto: Who knows? When we write and do what we do, we put all our energy in it and tour tirelessly. Who knows what the ingredient is? I don’t think there’s a formula. I know my brother’s written some amazing songs and those songs have connected with people. … It’s a lot of hard work, too. We go above and beyond what people are used to doing. We hard-charge it and that’s what you have to do these days. CDs aren’t really being bought at all. It’s all about the live show and it’s all about presentation. We love not just creating music but we love the visual aspects as well from the videos to the show to the merch to 2,000 different album covers to having fans fly in from all over the world to participate on the album. We try to do as much as we can.

Q: Have you played Tahoe before, and I would imagine this is one of your smaller venues you play?

Leto: We haven’t played Tahoe and we’re excited to. It’s a beautiful place. I’ve snowboarded there. Playing the smaller shows gives us an opportunity to be more intimate. We are able to share that experience on a much more intimate level. We just came back a couple of nights ago from the U.K. where we played in front of 70,000 people, and we’re playing all these sellout arena tours all over Europe. So to play smaller shows, we love it. It’s more immediate.

Q: Where besides the states are your biggest fans?

Leto: Europe. People are pretty excited over there. And Latin America. Germany is pretty amazing for us. When we started this whole touring cycle out playing front of, I don’t know, 100,000 people or so. That was amazing.

Q: Did you and your brother grow up playing in bands? And who is older?

Leto: I’m the older brother and music’s always been a big part of our lives. Actually, I just found a picture of him and I and I was 5 years old and he’s like 4. I’m banging bongos and there’s a guitar next to him. So it started early. … It was real natural because those were...

30 Seconds To Mars have decided to make a movie about their legal troubles with record label EMI over their 2009 album, This Is War.

Bob Lefsetz, American music figure, confirmed the project in a lengthy blog post about meeting Jared Leto (the band’s front man) on his Lefsets Letter blog.

Lefsets wrote:
“He’s [Leto] making a movie about 30 Seconds To Mars and its fight with EMI in the wake of the Terra Firma takeover. They were bugging me eons ago, but then faded away, I saw the album came out, I figured the film was shelved. But then Jared himself tracked me down, said it was still on and would I come on camera and testify.”

In 2007 EMI was bought by private equity firm Terra Firma for £3.2 billion. Shortly after the band tried to extricate themselves from their contract and EMI threatened to sue them for $30 million. The lawsuit was dropped and the band carried on with EMI for the release to their 2009 record.

Translation :
20 questions to Shannon Leto
A year and a half after « this is war » album release, the verdict was rendered : the epic third sound of 30 seconds to mars was a hit in the entire world,
Determined to not stop here, 30 seconds to mars was in Paris in June to celebrate « this is war » new edition release (with some bonus) and gave for this occasion two unforgettable gigs at La Maroquinerie and at l’Olympia,
To top it off, they announced a french tour in November
A little quizz with our friend Shannon Leto
1, You are on the road for more than 20 months, How are you holding up ?
Shannon : Yes! I feel good! I won’t complain ! I’m lucky to travel, espress myself on stage every night in front of thousand people,
2, You are used to play in some venues like the Zenith or Bercy, How have you approached the intimate show at the Maroquinerie ?
Shannon : This kind of gigs let us to find again the interaction with the fans, we tend to lose it when we play on big stages. It’s a return to basics. In these venues, you see them sing, sweat, and above all you can capture their attention, which is really unusual,
3, What do you do a few minutes before going on stage?
Shannon : I clear my mind and I don’t think of anything else at the concert and at my instrument. Obviously, I do some stretching but the most importantly for me is the mental preparation. I meditate and I start to play drums in my head. This is essential for me.
4, What do you like the most during the tour ?
Shannon : All these extraordinary moments that we live with our fans,
5, What do you hate the most?
Shannon : Interviews ! No I’m kidding [laugh], the worst on tour, is to be confronted to the bad food. In France, I have no problem there, but there are countries (I would not name it !) where they didn’t give me a very good meat, it looked like everything but not food. It is important not to neglect your diet, like sleep. This can affect your performance. And when you give concerts at a rythm as fast as ours, it doesn’t forgive,,
6, Is it sometimes difficult to keep good relations with the other members of the band?
Shannon : When you live constantly with the same people, there are moments where the tension can settle in. It’s human. In time, you learn to keep your distances with each other in certains situations. We try to stay focused on our common goals: work, concerts, composition, production ,,
7, What’s the first thing you will do whe...
